How to Find & Measure Property Lines

Finding and measuring property lines is one of the most common reasons people use Marea. Using high-resolution satellite imagery, you can identify property boundaries and measure lot sizes, perimeters, and individual boundary distances.

How to Measure Property Lines with Marea

Step 1: Find Your Property

Open Marea and navigate to the property. Switch to satellite view for the clearest picture of boundaries — you’ll be able to see fences, hedges, walls, driveways and other boundary markers.

Step 2: Trace the Boundary

Tap to drop pins at each corner of the property. For curved boundaries, add extra pins to follow the curve closely. Zoom in as much as possible for accuracy.

Step 3: Review Measurements

Once you’ve traced the full boundary, Marea shows you:

  • Total lot area — in acres, square feet, square meters or hectares
  • Total perimeter — the full distance around the property
  • Individual segments — the length of each property line between pins

Step 4: Save & Share

Save the measurement for future reference or export it as a KML file to share with others.

What Can You See on Satellite Maps?

Satellite imagery in Marea can help you identify:

  • Fences and walls — Physical boundary structures
  • Hedge lines and tree rows — Natural boundaries between properties
  • Driveways and paths — Often follow property boundaries
  • Changes in land use — Mowed lawn vs. field, different crop types
  • Building footprints — Structures and their relationship to boundaries

Common Property Measurement Tasks

Lot Size Calculation

Measure the total area of a residential or commercial lot. Compare with listed sizes on property records or real estate listings.

Fencing Estimates

Measure the perimeter of your property to estimate how much fencing material you need. Measure individual sides if you only need to fence part of the boundary.

Setback Measurement

Measure the distance from property lines to structures for building code compliance and permit applications.

Neighbour Boundary Queries

Get a clear picture of where your property ends and your neighbour’s begins. While Marea doesn’t provide legal boundaries, satellite imagery gives a practical visual reference.

Land Purchase Due Diligence

Before buying land, measure the actual boundaries and compare with the listed lot size. Identify any discrepancies before closing.

Important Note

Marea provides estimates based on satellite imagery and map data. For legally binding property boundary determinations, always consult a licensed land surveyor. Marea measurements are excellent for planning, estimating, and general reference — but they do not replace an official survey.

Tips for Accurate Property Measurements

  • Zoom in fully when placing pins at property corners
  • Use satellite view — it shows physical boundaries more clearly than map view
  • Place more pins along irregular or curved boundaries
  • Measure on a clear day — satellite imagery quality can vary
  • Cross-reference with available property records or plat maps when possible
