GPS Land Measurement
Marea is a GPS land measurement app that uses your phone’s built-in GNSS receiver to measure land area, distance and perimeter. No survey-grade equipment, no subscription required to get started — just open the app and start measuring.
How GPS Land Measurement Works
Marea reads your phone’s GPS coordinates and lets you mark boundary points by either:
- Walking the boundary — Walk around the edge of your land while Marea records your GPS track. Tap to fix corners; the app handles the rest.
- Tapping a satellite map — If you can see the boundary clearly from above, drop pins by tapping the satellite map. Faster than walking, often more precise than GPS alone in open terrain.
- Combining both — Start with GPS, refine with satellite pins. This hybrid approach gives you the best accuracy for irregular or partially hidden boundaries.
As you place points, Marea calculates the enclosed area, the total perimeter and the distance between adjacent points — all updating in real time.
How Accurate Is GPS Land Measurement?
Smartphone GPS has improved dramatically. Modern devices use multiple satellite constellations (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou) and typically achieve:
- 3–5 metres of horizontal accuracy in open terrain
- 5–10 metres under tree cover or near buildings
- Sub-metre with phones that support dual-frequency GNSS (most flagships since 2018)
For most land measurement use cases — farm fields, property estimates, construction site planning, conservation mapping — this accuracy is more than enough. For legal surveys you still need a licensed surveyor, but for everyday measurements Marea gives you results in seconds.
What You Can Measure
Property Lines
Walk the perimeter of your property to map boundary lines. Useful for fencing quotes, landscaping plans, easement disputes and insurance documentation.
Agricultural Land
Measure fields for crop planning, subsidy applications, irrigation design and yield-per-acre analysis. Save fields and re-measure year after year as boundaries change.
Forestry & Conservation
Map managed forest parcels, conservation easements and habitat zones. Marea exports to KML so you can hand off measurements to GIS systems.
Construction Sites
Get a fast estimate of site area, building footprints and earthworks volumes before bringing in formal survey crews.
Plots & Parcels
Verify the size of a plot before buying or selling. A GPS land measurement app gives you ground-truth numbers, not just whatever the seller claims.
Why Choose Marea?
- Works on any modern phone — iOS 14+ and Android 8+
- Multiple measurement units — Acres, hectares, square metres, square feet, square kilometres, square miles
- Save measurements — Build a library of measured land that’s always available
- KML export — Compatible with Google Earth, QGIS, ArcGIS and most other GIS software
- No internet required — Once maps are cached, GPS measurement keeps working offline
- Free to start — Download and measure your first plot immediately
Tips for Better GPS Accuracy
- Wait for a good fix — Give your phone 30 seconds outdoors before measuring; accuracy improves significantly once it locks on to multiple satellites
- Keep the sky clear — Step away from buildings, dense trees and overhead obstacles when placing critical points
- Walk slowly at corners — Slowing down at boundary corners lets the GPS settle for a more accurate reading
- Use satellite refinement — After walking, switch to satellite view and drag any pins that look off
